High Cliff, Derbyshire Green Roof design and installation
High Cliffe, near Eyam in Derbyshire
Green Estate CIC Ltd. were contacted by a family who are building a new home in the hamlet of High Cliffe, near Eyam in Derbyshire. The design of the house made the most of the fantastic view over rolling hills, and aimed to be almost invisible from the sky with the building disappearing seamlessly in to the hillside behind. We were asked to design and install the green roof that fitted in the rural setting and achieved the aspirations of the project.
The site is high on the southern side of the Derbyshire hills and provided a perfect location for our sister company Pictorial Meadows’ Patchwork Quilt meadow turf. Green Estate ‘Green Roof’ substrate provided just the right level of nutrition, anchorage and water holding to support the meadow flowers to flourish.
The Green Estate Green Roof Team undertook all the required work to back fill the levels behind the house, install vegetation barriers around the drain heads and sky-lights. Protection layers and drainage mats were required for this project, these need to be laid correctly prior to the growing medium substrate being applied. Substrate mounds further increase the opportunity for insects to find a ‘perfect’ habitat to build nests. Finally, the Pictorial Meadows pre-grown Patchwork Quilt meadow turf was laid over the whole roof and onto the adjoining bank, giving a seamless transition from nature to structure.
