Project Description

Lea Primary School near Matlock, Derbyshire approached Green Estate CIC Ltd. to create a memorial garden to remember Gail, a very popular teacher who had lost her life to cancer just the year before. The School had an area of land that they wanted to transform, but were not sure what they really wanted, but knew it needed to have a wild meadow atmosphere.

Green Estate Design and Build Team worked with the school to design the area including a pond, which would not only encourage bees and bugs, but also be a beautiful attraction for the children and visitors to the school.  The chosen area had been neglected for some years, the Green Estate team cleared the existing vegetation and prepared the site for the installation of the Pictorial Meadows pre-grown Purple Haze meadow turf.

Gail had written a poem during her illness ‘The Wood’.  Green Estate arranged for the words to be carved into the rails of the fence, that boarder the garden.  Two English oak logs were positioned around the pond, so that teachers can bring the children into the garden to experience the Pictorial Meadows turf close at hand and interact with the wildlife.
