Project Description

Covered in vegetation and plants, Green roofs have many advantages and provide excellent benefits to everyone due to their energy efficient and environmentally friendly characteristics.

These benefits include reducing rain water run-off and improving the buildings drainage system, acting as a barrier to protect the waterproof membrane and therefore increasing waterproof lifespan, reducing building cooling costs and boosting thermal performance, improving the air quality (especially in urban areas), creating a visual impact and increasing bio diversity.

Green Estate have delivered a number of green roof contracts throughout the UK and carry out maintenance jobs and green roof upkeep.

A client got in touch with the team at Green Estate requesting a green roof.

Our team began the building process by ensuring insulation and protection made up the foundations of the green roof. Insulation boards, waterproof membrane and a separation edge around the perimeter of the green roof were installed to create a base. Upon this, drainage boards, flat roof drains and a drip irrigation system were built.

A native wildflower blanket was then lay over a green roof substrate covering all areas of the green roof. This was followed by Rimini textured paving which made up the roof terrace area. A foldable guardrail was finally installed to the full perimeter of the roof.

Green Estate believe that green roofs should be maintained twice a year in order to keep them strong and healthy.

The team returned to the green roof to carry out some general maintenance to ensure the green roof remains in overall good condition. The drainage channels are checked, vegetation is removed from gravel margins, the leaves and debris are cleared, and general in-blown invasive species are removed.
